Buda Factory
The post-industrial BUDA island, situated in the center of Kortrijk, is in full redevelopment. One of the last remaining textile factories is turned into a mixer-building for educational, artistic and creative manufacturing purposes. Two prime interventions turn the closed stack of floors inside out. The interior core of the complex is gutted, giving way to the unfolding of a pentagonal vertical space, and allowing daylight to penetrate deeply into the existing spaces. An open-air pavilion, equally pentagonal, graces the street. This uncanny non-programmed anteroom becomes the project’s ethos, a suspension of disbelieve of sorts, without disclosing what is to follow.
